These free concerts in the park are held every Saturday afternoon 5 pm to 7 pm during June and July near the boat dock area across from the ranger station. Located in a pleasant outdoor setting overlooking Vasona Lake and Los Gatos Creek, this nine-week, family-friendly music series features local artists performing a wide variety of acoustic genres ranging from big band, to jazz, to traditional and contemporary folk. Concessions are available in the park including hot dogs and drinks. Picnicking is common practice at the concerts, and alcohol is permitted in picnic areas. The concerts are free, and the musicians performing in the series will have CDs and merchandise for sale. Pedestrians and bicycles are admitted to the park free of charge; there is a $6 per car entrance fee charged by Santa Clara County Parks. The series kicks off on June 2 with Calaveras, an East Bay folk/Americana trio that has captured the prestigious Kerrville New Folk prize as well as several awards from the West Coast Songwriters. Peter Yarrow of Peter, Paul and Mary, called their most recent album, Ready to Fly, "wonderful music, wonderfully performed.” On June 9, back by popular demand, is the 10th Avenue Band. The synergy of their high energy performance, innovative arrangements and nostalgic music ignites audiences worldwide. In the last three years alone, the band has toured England, Ireland, Scotland, Finland, Sweden, Hungary, Australia, New Zealand and China, and is headed for a Mediterranean tour this July. On June 16, history will repeat itself as Kathy Larisch and Carol McComb take the stage to recreate their exquisitely close, haunting harmonies that set Kathy and Carol apart from other artists of the 1960s folk era. Kathy and Carol appeared at the famed 1965 Newport Folk Festival and toured with such icons as Mimi Farina, James Taylor, Arlo Guthrie and Pete Seeger. Since the re-release of their 1965 Electra Records debut album Kathy & Carol, the two have been singing together again, rediscovering their old arrangements and creating new ones. Their concert includes many of the songs from that famed album, along with plenty of other great material both old and new, drawn from traditional music, the Carter Family canon, and McCombs fine originals that have captured the hearts of Bay Area folk fans. - more - The complete schedule is below, and details are available at www.southbayfolks.org/vasona June 2 Calaveras (award-winning folk/Americana trio) June 9 10th Avenue Band (big band, jump swing, dixieland) June 16 Kathy & Carol (the 1960s folk duo of Kathy Larisch and Carol McComb) June 23 The Bird Dogs (Americana/roots) June 30 The Mighty Avalanche Choir (folk/Americana with rich vocal harmonies) July 7 Leanne Weatherly (jazz standards and originals) July 14 Plan B (original music rooted in the blues and old country)/Radio Rail (songs of the American West) July 21 Ambergrass Unlimited (old-time harmony and lively guitar duets) July 28 San Jose Metropolitan Band (marches, show tunes, big band and symphonic classics) According to Aniko Millan, Senior Park Ranger at Vasona Lake Park, the Vasona Vibrations Concert Series is a way to connect with the community and to celebrate the talent and creativity of our local musicians. “We look forward to the concert series every year,” said Millan. “Families and friends come together to enjoy the music, some food, maybe some wine, all in the beautiful surroundings of this gem in the middle of Silicon Valley that we know as Vasona Lake County Park.” About South Bay Folks South Bay Folks (SBF) began in the early 1990s with a community of musicians and music lovers who started a folk-oriented, all acoustic open mike to provide an opportunity for performance, collaboration and musical development. For over a decade, SBF members have volunteered their effort, time, and talent to foster a rich and robust acoustic music scene in the greater San Jose, California area. Today, SBF continues to host its free, public open mike at Mission City Coffee Roasting in Santa Clara, Calif., encompassing a wide variety of acoustic genres. SBF also keeps a calendar of live, local, acoustic music performances and maintains a mailing list to keep track of SBF activities and events. For the past five years, SBF has worked with Santa Clara County Parks, coordinating with musicians and providing sound support to bring live folk and acoustic music to a wider audience through the free Vasona Vibrations Summer Concert Series at Vasona Lake County Park.
