Located in a pleasant outdoor setting overlooking Vasona Lake and Los Gatos Creek, this nine-week series features local artists performing a wide variety of acoustic genres ranging from big band, to jazz, to traditional and contemporary folk. Pack a picnic dinner or enjoy concessions at the park, and join us on the lawn for Vasona Vibrations 2006. Launching the series this summer is With River, the new collaboration of singer-songwriters Philip Rodriguez and Colin Carthen. Fresh out of the studio with a new CD, With River performs amazing original and traditional folk music, all roots-based and acoustic, on guitars, mandolin, and violin to accompany powerful vocal harmonies. Their music is fresh and stirring, reflecting the influences of Townes Van Zandt, early Bob Dylan, Tracy Chapman, and Jeff Buckley. Find eight more weeks of performance info, pictures and links to the artist's own pages, as well as maps, driving directions and more at http://SouthBayFolks.org/vasona/ See you there! ****************************** * Mission City Coffee update * ****************************** Plans to renovate the performance room at "The Mission" are moving right along. Engineers and contractors have been consulted, estimates procured, permission from the building owner received, and permits sought to move the long wall back eight feet, and to remove the central post. Eventually, there will be a dedicated sound system as well as room treatment to improve acoustics. ************************************************** * SBF Acoustic Open Mike: keyboards OK; schedule * ************************************************** For the first time in a long time, the SBF open mike is without a piano. Several folks have offered one for our use, but until the expected renovations at Mission City Coffee are completed, that's not even an option. In years past, during the surprisingly few periods when a piano was not available, SBF adopted a policy of allowing electronic keyboards that were set to an acoustic piano voice, and we will do that again. In keeping with the spirit of the SBF open mike, we request that keyboards be set to an acoustic voice, and played live. No sequencing; no drum machines. Also, please remember that we are struggling to get through as many as twenty performers in a given night; setup time comes out of your alloted ten minutes. You will need to set up and breakdown your keyboard quickly. SBF Acoustic Open Mike Every Thursday from 7-10pm (sign up by 6:45pm) Mission City Coffee Roasting Company 2221 The Alameda, Santa Clara, CA 95050 (adjacent to Santa Clara Univ) tel: 408-261-2221 URL: http://www.SouthBayFolks.org/openmike.html Mission City Coffee offers a wide variety of sandwiches and other good food, excellent coffee, late hours, plenty of room to accommodate a South Bay Folks crowd, and the owner is very music-friendly. It is a pleasant space in an old building filled with character, and there are plans afoot to make Mission City a notable South Bay venue for small, acoustic concerts. Directions: From I-880 heading south, take the CA-82 exit to Santa Clara and go 0.3 mi; bear right at The Alameda - go 0.3 mi. From I-880 heading north, take the CA-82 exit - go 0.2 mi; bear left onto the CA-82 N ramp to Santa Clara University and go 120 ft; turn left at The Alameda - go 0.5 mi ******************************************************* * The Gig List: live folk and acoustic music calendar * ******************************************************* The Gig List is a calendar of folk and acoustic music performances in and around the South Bay.
