Elizabeth was a great lover of music, and a staunch supporter of local concerts. The only time Elizabeth ever missed an SBF open mike was when she and Jim were traveling. She will be greatly missed. The Zimmerman family has asked us to make sure that all of Elizabeth's many SBF friends are aware of the memorial service to be held 4pm, Thursday, April 10th, at the Blossom Valley Group Area in Vasona Lake County Park, 333 Blossom Hill Rd. in Los Gatos to be followed by a special SBF open mike dedicated to her at the regular place, Village Falafel in Cupertino, and regular time, 6:45pm-10pm. More from the Zimmerman family: Betty Jean (Elizabeth) Zimmerman January 26, 1943 - April 4, 2014 Santa Clara On April 4, 2014, Betty Jean (Elizabeth) Zimmerman passed away in peace as a result of an accident. Despite a body that progressively challenged her mobility, all who knew her admired her for bringing light to the world with her indomitable spirit, beaming smile and passion for peace. Born January 26, 1943 in San Antonio, Texas, Elizabeth loved to travel the country with Jim, her beloved husband of 43 years, listen to live music and lend her trademark "Whooo-woo!" to the applause (especially when Jim played fiddle at the Open Mic night). Elizabeth had many other passions, including raising three strong daughters, Rebecca, Wendy and Leslie. Elizabeth graduated Cum Laude from Texas A&I University in 1963 and from UC Berkeley in 1966 with a master's in Library Science, and then worked as the librarian at the Stanford University Engineering Library. In the 1970s, with a focus on her children, Elizabeth was one of the early active parents of the Open-Kindergarten—or "OK Program"—and was instrumental in winning approval to expand the program to higher grades, which is now known as the Christa McAuliffe School. Elizabeth also worked locally for peace and justice, serving on boards and/or committees for the Methodist Fellowship for Social Action, Santa Clara Valley Chapter of the ACLU, San Jose Peace and Justice Center, Women's International League for Peace and Freedom (WILPF), Human Relations Commission of Santa Clara County, Holiday Peace Fair and San Jose Religious Society of Friends (Quakers). As an activist, Elizabeth had local and federal legislators on speed dial and put the button to weekly use. The one place where Elizabeth's competitive spirit overcame her passion for peace was at game three of a Giants/Dodgers series where she had been known to wave her broom in the air, yelling "SWEEP!" Memory of Elizabeth's spirit evokes a smile, keeping her light alive in the hearts of her husband, daughters, seven grandchildren and all who knew her. A memorial service for Elizabeth will be held this Thursday, April 10, 2014, at 4 p.m. at Blossom Valley Group Area at Vasona Lake Park, 333 Blossom Hill Road in Los Gatos. ................................................................ ************************************************ * How to add or remove yourself from this list * ************************************************ The SBF newsletter should only be sent to those who have asked to receive it.
