Dave was a talented vocalist, harmonica, and penny whistle player with a deep and broad repertoire, and a keen wit. Dave rarely missed our weekly open mike, and was always ready to jam. We miss him every week. Dave's wife, Rosemarie, passed away three weeks later on December 9th. Our deepest condolences to Dave's family for their loss. Many folks have been asking if there would be a memorial. Dave's sons, Larry and Grant Wunsch, sent this note: "Dave left us some instructions on what to do upon his passing. He asked that we send out the following notice to his friends and family. 'This is your notification of the death of David E Wunsch, formerly of San Jose, California; Orlando and Boynton Beach, Florida; Dallas, Texas; and Galesburg, Illinois. Mr Wunsch died on 11/17/2015. This notice is being sent to you at his request, by one of his survivors. Please take whatever action seems appropriate. Mr. Wunsch has suggested you should have either a shot of good scotch whiskey or a bottle of good beer. Tell your bartender that Mr. Wunsch is buying. Editorial comment: Dave's estate is not buying. Your bartender will need to go after Dave.' "We hope to hold a joint memorial for our parents at a later date. Best Regards, Grant and Larry Wunsch" Taking the "action [that] seems appropriate," South Bay Folks will dedicate an upcoming open mike to Dave. The Northern California Bluegrass Society has put up an obituary for Dave at: http://www.scbs.org/2015/12/14/dave-wunsch-dies-harmonica-player-singer-longtime-ncbsscbs-member/ There is a Memorial Facebook Page for Dave at: https://www.facebook.com/david.wunsch.908 There is also a Memorial Facebook Page for Rosemarie at: https://www.facebook.com/rosemarie.wunsch.7?fref=ts South Bay Folks member, Chip Curry, has known Dave since long before there was a South Bay Folks and had this to say: "We lost a great musician, entertainer and enthusiastic purveyor of roots music. "I met Dave when I first arrived in California in the mid 1980's and found him practically everywhere music was played. He made himself welcome in any musical setting, knowing practically every song or tune you could name that was written before 1960--be it Celtic, country, Appalachian, or American popular music. "Many nights at the South Bay Folks open mics, Dave told tales of playing with great players of generations past in his early years in Houston Texas, a fertile ground for early country and blues. "He made a career as an electrical engineer, specializing in microwave circuitry. Fiddler Joe Weed tells of one occasion when he was struggling to find the perfect components to amplify an electric violin. Dave joyfully invited him over to his shop and solved the problems with the perfect transistors to provide the warmest sound. "There was rarely a night at the weekly South Bay Folks open mics that Dave was not in attendance, with bag of harmonicas in all 12 keys, and a dogeared book of his favorite songs. "Dave, we will miss helping you on stage those last months, we will miss playing music with you, and we will miss your guiding stewardship of the music we love so much." ................................................................ ************************************************ * How to add or remove yourself from this list * ************************************************ The SBF newsletter should only be sent to those who have asked to receive it.
