The Avalanche Choir

» Americana, folk & originals featuring trademark, rich vocal harmonies

The Avalanche Choir has delighted Bay Area audiences for the past 14 years with selections of ballads, standards, a cappella arrangements, folk, bluegrassy tunes, and originals. Year after year, this highly respected and always popular group has packed the house as the anchor performers for the Fiddling Cricket Concert Series' Annual Holiday Show.

The six-piece group relies on tight harmony and richly orchestrated instrumentation to deliver its trademark musical experience. The choir's four vocalists all play multiple instruments and sing a balanced selection of original and rarely heard music festival classics. This year the choir has expanded its idiomatic reach and dynamic punch by adding Dennis Patterson on percussion. Dennis is... the Dennis of "Dennis and the Sharks", a well known and long time Santa Cruz favorite.

Jessica Johnson

» jazz standards & contemporary songs arranged with intriguing original jazz twist; smooth and soulful brand of jazz infused R&B

"San Jose native Jessica Johnson has been turning heads and ears with her smooth and soulful brand of jazz infused R&B, earning more praise and awards than most musicians twice her age receive in a lifetime. At 20 years old, what Johnson may lack in professional experience is made up for with a voice as strong and bright as a young Aretha Franklin. Her recently released debut CD, Till It Happens, is a dynamic collection of R&B treasures that span from Stevie Wonder's "You and I" to classics like "Summertime" and "Cry Me a River." With a promising start towards a brilliant career, San Jose's own Jessica Johnson might be one of the next divas of soul."

Calaveras

» high-energy, original acoustic roots trio spanning from American traditional song forms to explorations of contemporary sounds

Singer-songwriters Greg Beattie and Victoria Blythe, along with instrumentalist Dave Decker, combine voices and a half dozen acoustic instruments into original songs that are both fresh and timeless--from the roots of American traditional song forms to explorations of contemporary sounds.

Their songs have captured the prestigious Kerrville New Folk prize, grand prize in the West Coast Songwriters International song contest as well as first place in two additional categories, the Napa Valley Emerging Songwriter award, West Coast songwriter's Association Song of the Year honors, and have appeared in TV shows and movies. Their songs have been recorded by other artists and their performance of "Ready to Fly" is on a compilation CD that features such well known artists as Joan Baez and Cheryl Wheeler.

Their live show is a mix of Victoria's soaring, ethereal vocals and hauntingly beautiful fiddle on pure folk ballads and sultry jazz-fusion torch songs, Greg's energetic and insightful musical treatment of birth, death and everything in between, and Dave's constantly creative lead-guitar commentary.
